TRATAKA-THE EYE YOGA


Trataka is a Hatha Yoga method to develop concentration. The practice of Trataka is based on the scientific fact, that the movement of the eyeballs can reflect our thinking process. It Purifies the eyes, strengthens the eye muscles and improves vision and memory. Helps with sleeping difficulties and bed wetting. Strengthens the ability to concentrate and is therefore recommended for school children. It may improve your eye sight.Trataka removes distractions in the mind. It can make the mind calm and steady, thereby increasing the power of concentration.




THERE ARE THREE STAGE OF JYOTI TRATAKA

Stage 1: Effortless gazing or focusing at flame.

  • With your close eyes let’s start with first stage.
  • Slowly open your eyes with a few blinks and look at the floor. Do not look at the flame directly.
  • Now slowly shift your vision to the base of the candle stand, then move to top of the stand, then to the candle and then slowly look at the flame of the candle. Now start gazing at the whole flame without blinking your eyes. If tears comes, allow it to flow freely.
  • Gaze at the flame for 30 seconds.
  • Slowly close your eyes, rub yours palms, generate heat, form a cup of your palms and cover your eyeballs. Remember not to touch your palms on your eyes.
  • Feel the cool sensation around the eyeballs. Relax for a few seconds. Do not open your eyes immediately.

Stage 2: Intensive focusing at the tip of the wick of the flame.

  • Gently open your eyes with a few blinks and look at the floor. Do not look at the flame directly.
  • Slowly shift your vision to the base of the candle stand, then move to top of the stand, then to the candle and then slowly look at the flame. Now start gazing at the whole flame without any effort.
  • Now slowly gaze at the tip of the wick of the candle, the small black cord. Focus your attention at one point. This is a practice of focusing and concentration. Keep on gazing till tears appear. Try not to blink your eyes. By this practice the gaze becomes steady and makes the mind one pointed.
  • Gaze the flame for about 30 seconds.
  • Slowly close your eyes, rub yours palms, generate heat, form a cup of your palms and cover your eyeballs. Remember not to touch your palms on your eyes.
  • Feel the cool sensation around the eyeballs. Relax for a few seconds. Do not open your eyes immediately.

Stage 3: De-focusing

  • Let us proceed to last stage of Jyoti trataka.
  • Gently open your eyes with a few blinks and look at the floor. Do not look at the flame directly.
  • Slowly shift your vision to the base of the candle stand, then move to top of the stand, then to the candle and then slowly look at the flame. First fix your attention at the flame, then gradually widen your vision. Slowly De-focus your attention from the flame and have De-focused gaze on the flame. With expansive awareness, collect all the details of the flame such as colour and shape of the flame and aura around the flame. Then observe the aura expanding more and more and see the small light part uses around the flame.
  • Recognize the subtle changes achieved by De-focusing.
  • After one minute of De-focusing, gaze on the flame. Then slowly close your eyes and retain the image in your mind. Visualized the flame between your eyebrows and collect all the details with your eyes closed. When the image disappears go for the palming.

TIPS FOR PRACTICING TRATAKA:

  1. This is to be practiced in the dark preferably in the evening
  2. Sit with your head, neck and spine upright.
  3. Always open the eyes with a few blinks.
  4. During Jyoti trataka, when you open your eyes, don’t look at the flame directly. Start looking at the floor and then slowly bring your gaze onto the flame.
  5. During palming don’t let the palms touch or press the eyeballs.
  6. The practitioners should always avoid undue strain to the eyes.
